Oppose HB 829 and Protect Patient Access to Medical Cannabis

I am reaching out to bring your attention to an urgent matter that requires our collective advocacy. Rep. Jason Nemes has introduced House Bill 829, which seeks to impose additional limitations on the Kentucky medical cannabis program before it even gets off the ground. This legislation not only makes it more challenging for patients to access medical cannabis but also includes provisions that could deter others from participating in the program. The bill reiterates existing regulations on public consumption and imposes unnecessary requirements, such as forcing patients to sign pamphlets kept by dispensaries. Most concerning are provisions that could allow parochial schools and school nurses to deny medical cannabis to students under the guise of religious freedom. Furthermore, HB 829 doubles the signature requirement for bringing the question of medical cannabis to the ballot, potentially overturning local governments' decisions and imposing undue residency requirements on petitioners. Our organization, Kentucky NORML, staunchly opposes any efforts to restrict patient access to medical cannabis. We believe in an evidence-based approach to cannabis reform that prioritizes patient rights, access to whole-plant cannabis, and protections for doctors, employees, and housing. I urge you to take action by reaching out to your lawmakers and expressing your opposition to HB 829. Your voice matters, and together, we can make a difference in protecting the rights of patients in Kentucky. Please stay informed about the bill's progress and be ready to engage in advocacy efforts as needed. If you have any questions or need additional information, feel free to reach out. Thank you for your commitment to this important cause.
