Rep. Tom Kean Jr. recently received the same protection while missing nearly 4 months and 140 votes for medical treatment. Rep. Frederica Wilson missed weeks while recovering from surgery. Congress gives its members time to heal without taking away their incomes. Millions of working people have no such guarantee. Federal law does not require private employers to provide paid sick leave or paid family and medical leave. Workers can be forced to choose between following a doctor’s orders and paying rent, caring for a sick child and buying groceries, or recovering from surgery and keeping their jobs. Every person deserves the time and financial security needed to recover from illness, welcome a child, care for a loved one, or survive a serious medical emergency.
