Pass Legislation to Defend Native People’s Housing Rights

In response to the Trump administration’s attacks on Native housing, including proposed cuts in Trump’s FY2027 budget and the administration’s freezing of Native housing funds previously allocated by Congress, a bipartisan group of Senators and Representatives have introduced a new bill that protects and modernizes Native federal housing programs. The bill would modernize and reauthorize the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determinization Act of 1996, the primary federal law providing funding to support affordable housing in Indian Country. Here’s what several of the bill’s co-sponsors said: “Reauthorizing and updating this legislation will strengthen self-determination, expand access to housing, and provide Tribes with the flexibility and resources needed to address local needs.” - Sen. Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) “As Congress continues its efforts to address housing challenges around the country, we cannot leave Native communities behind. The federal government has a trust responsibility to ensure Tribes have the tools to meet the housing needs of their people.” -Sen. Lis Murkowski (R-AK) “Montana is home to seven Indian Reservations, and it’s one of my top priorities to ensure that these communities have equal access and resources, including when it comes to housing.” - Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) Even though the federal government is legally obligated to uphold Tribes’ treaty rights, such as providing funding for housing, Native people on Turtle Island are more likely to experience houselessness than any other group. That’s why our collective action is so critical today. Click “Start Writing” to send an urgent message to Congress to pass the Native American Housing and Self-Determinization Modernization Act now.
