This after the Mayor told every department in the city to make a 5%-10% budget cut due to a $20 million deficit. And that deficit’s cause? Cop City. (Atlanta was on track to have a surplus before the city voted to give another $51.5 million to the police department in 2024.) This year, the Mayor is proposing 5% cuts to the Department of Parks & Recreation, the Department of Transportation, and the Department of City Planning. Meanwhile 32% of the budget is going to police, and tens of millions to the Department of Corrections even though ACDC only houses 100 individuals per night. We can’t continue to funnel more and more money every year to the police and jails every year while basic government services suffer! Demand the Mayor stop the cuts to Transportation and Parks & Rec! Our parks are only getting more and more use. This is not a time to cut parks! Atlanta is under an ADA consent decree because our sidewalks are so bad. We can’t defend these cuts to ATLDOT! The Department of Corrections should not have cushion in their budget while other services suffer.
