Pass the Dream and Promise Act of 2019 NOW!

Karen Reyes, a proud AFT member, is finishing her fifth year teaching children who are deaf and hard of hearing in Austin, Texas. She’s helping her students on their journey to be able to communicate and achieve their dreams. Not only is she a wonderful teacher, a union activist and a part of her local’s executive board, she also is a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipient. Karen is one of the more than 750,000 immigrant young people with DACA status who are contributing and strengthening their communities. She was brought to the United States as a child and has done everything our society has asked of her: She graduated from college, passed a rigorous background check and met the educational requirements to obtain DACA. Despite it all, Karen still lives in fear. The president has moved to shut down programs like DACA, temporary protected status, and deferred enforced departure, leaving 1.5 million working families uncertain about their future. And it’s not just Karen. Close to 400,000 individuals who have been granted temporary protected status or deferred enforced departure are facing the threat of deportation. Many of these individuals have lived in the United States for more than 20 years, since their countries were torn by armed conflict, civil war or natural environmental disasters. Some must travel for work and have been arrested because of it, like recently detained flight attendant and DACA recipient Selene Roman. They are valued members of our communities. They work in a wide range of settings, including construction, hotels, meatpacking and food processing, grocery stores, schools and child care centers. They are homeowners, and are parents to more than 280,000 U.S. citizen children. Our nation is stronger because of immigrants. Write to your lawmakers now and tell them to pass the Dream and Promise Act of 2019 (H.R. 6), the SECURE Act (S. 879), and the DREAM Act (S. 874).
