Students decided to take the issue on themselves. 98 students representing all 50 states gathered at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute in Boston to debate and develop a national AI policy for schools. Their final proposal, the Students First Act, passed by an overwhelming 82-16 vote. Now Congress should listen to what they came up with and turn key protections into federal law. The students recognized that AI should support teachers, not replace their judgment. Their proposal calls for teachers to have clear policies for using AI in the classroom and makes clear that AI should never be the sole basis for decisions about grades, discipline, or other major decisions affecting students. They also called for school administrators to establish transparent rules for AI use, protect personal information, regularly review policies as technology changes, and make sure educators receive the training they need. Schools should also teach students how AI works and how to recognize misinformation, bias, privacy risks, and other problems that can come with these tools. AI is already changing classrooms across the country. Teachers, administrators, students, and families should not have to wait years for Congress to catch up. Students from every state have already shown that common ground is possible and offered lawmakers a serious place to start.
