Postmaster Steiner Must Stop Raising Prices

On July 12, the price of a Forever stamp will rise from 78 cents to 82 cents. Domestic postcards and other mailing services will also cost more under the latest USPS rate increase approved by postal regulators. This continues the failed playbook created under former Postmaster General Louis DeJoy. The price of a stamp has climbed from 55 cents when DeJoy took office to 82 cents today, an increase of nearly 50%. Customers have not received better service in return. First-Class Mail on-time performance declined from 91% in fiscal year 2022 to approximately 86% in 2025, even after USPS expanded some delivery windows by two days. And this is all after DeJoy slowed the mail twice. Postmaster General David Steiner should learn from the chaotic damage caused by DeJoy’s Delivering for America plan. Instead, Steiner has floated raising stamp prices as high as 90 or 95 cents. USPS leadership must focus on generating new revenue by expanding public services at local post offices. The Postal Service should partner with federal, state, local, and tribal governments to sell bus and subway passes, process hunting and fishing licenses and payments, provide benefits verification, offer Wi-Fi and office services, support senior check-ins, and bring essential public services closer to every community. Steiner should also bring back postal banking. Post offices could offer basic affordable check and savings accounts, in addition to other financial services like bill payments and low-fee ATMs in rural towns and lower-income neighborhoods that private banks have abandoned. The Postal Service has a public mission to bind the nation together. Steiner must reverse DeJoy’s failed approach and pursue an expanded public service strategy that will ensure USPS is sustainable for the future and remains a cornerstone of every ZIP code. Click “START WRITING” to tell Postmaster General Steiner: Stop raising prices and start expanding services like postal banking to generate revenue and provide public services now.
