Tell City Council: NO Delays on Short-Term Rental Regulations!

	<thumbnail_url>https://actionnetwork.org//images/generic_facebook.jpg</thumbnail_url>

Short-term rentals threaten housing for our neighbors and our communities. That’s why the City of Los Angeles has a Home-Sharing Ordinance that allows people to rent out their own homes for a little extra cash, but prevents landlords and corporate speculators from flipping our housing into de facto hotels for tourists. The number of STRs we already have in LA have raised rent for the rest of us by as much as $810/year, and that’s partly because the City doesn’t enforce the law. 67% of all STRs in LA are illegal, and just in December of 2024, there were over 4500 non-compliant listings in LA—but the City only issued 103 citations in the entire year. Airbnb’s solution is to undermine the ordinance and make it easier to take more units on the market—which will mean less housing, higher rent, and more people living on the streets. Our plan is to crack down on illegal short-term rentals. We’re supporting two MAJOR amendments to the Home-Sharing Ordinance that do just that: a private right of action, allowing affected citizens to sue illegal STR operators and non-compliant platforms; and an electronic verification system to automatically prevent illegal STRs from being listed. But they need to hear from YOU: Tell your City Councilmember you want real enforcement, not more lost housing. Tell City Council to take action NOW to protect renters and LA residents, and crack down on illegal STRs! Better Neighbors LA is a coalition of Southern California hosts, tenants, housing activists, hotel workers, and community members. We believe the best way to support true home-sharing for hosts and guests is also the best way to protect jobs and the community: by curbing illegal commercial activity in the short-term rental industry.
