Protect Sacred Oak Flat

This Earth Day, let’s protect the sacred and ecologically important Oak Flat. Despite Tribal opposition, this land has just been transferred to the notorious foreign mining corporation Resolution Copper. But we have more steps to take to fight for Oak Flat. Resolution Copper is depending on getting access to surrounding public lands to build infrastructure that’s necessary for the mines. We just directed 17,000 messages to Arizona’s leaders, urging them to protect state trust land and prohibit Resolution Copper from building a planned toxic waste dump. Now, we must send messages to Congress. Rep. Adelita Grijalva is carrying on her father Raúl’s fight for environmental justice and Tribal sovereignty. She just introduced the Preserve the Traditional Cultural Place Chí’chil Biłdagoteel Historic District Act, which would: Direct the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture to preserve the natural condition of public lands right next to Oak Flat in the Chi’chil Biłdagotel Historical District. This includes prohibiting mining-related activities such as toxic waste pipelines and infrastructure, road development, and rights-of-way. Require the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture to work with Tribes that have ties to this historical district -- including government-to-government consultations and agreements requested by these Tribes to ensure continued access to sacred and cultural spaces, so they can keep engaging in traditional activities as their ancestors have since time immemorial. Protecting adjacent lands is important for its own sake, but it could also stop the mine itself. We’ve drafted a message that you can send directly to Congress. If you can, please add a sentence or two to personalize it so it’s even more powerful. Click “START WRITING” to send a message to your U.S. Representative and U.S. Senators today: Cosponsor and pass Rep. Adelita Grijalva's new legislation to protect Oak Flat and nearby public lands.
