Save the Sportsmen’s Lodge!

A developer has proposed demolishing the Sportsmen’s Lodge Hotel and and developing the site with largely market rate housing. In 2013, SurveyLA listed the site, including the hotel, in its list of “Historic Districts, Planning Districts and Multi-Property Resources” because of its status as a popular gathering place for people in the entertainment industry and as part of the development of the San Fernando Valley. To quote Survey LA, “Sportsmen's Lodge is an important San Fernando Valley site for its evolving use from rural to urban which mirrored the Valley's growth; as a roadside attraction to the Valley's vibrant automobile culture; as one of the Valley's earliest fine dining locations; and as a reflection of the community's connection to the entertainment industry.” With the demolition of the Event Center, the hotel is an important remaining link to that history. Less well known is the site’s unique labor history. For example, it is one of the first hotels organized in the entire city after hotel workers got the legal right to organize unions in the late 1950s. The City Council's PLUM Committee will consider this project on Tuesday, January 16th. Please urge the City to support preserving the Sportsmen’s Lodge as part of the development project.
