SB 135 Would Damage Ohio Higher Education

	<thumbnail_url>https://actionnetwork.org//images/generic_facebook.jpg</thumbnail_url>

We are asking those who are concerned with the well-being of Ohio's public higher education system to write to members of the Ohio Senate Workforce & Higher Education Committee about SB 135. Details about this legislation are below: In March, Ohio Senate Bill 135 was introduced by freshman Senator Jerry Cirino, a former business leader, who also has served as a trustee of a private college and community college. SB 135 contains a myriad of changes to higher education in Ohio that would impact: -College and university funding -Campus speech/First Amendment policies -Academic freedom for professors -Degree and program offerings at two-year colleges and four-year universities -Transparency and new reporting requirements for institutions of higher education While there are some positive aspects of the legislation, such as the ones that would increase institutional transparency and prevent institutions from withholding transcripts from students, the bill would cause serious financial problems for universities especially, create unnecessary and detrimental competition between community colleges and universities, as well as impose speech restrictions on faculty in the classroom. Click here for a more detailed article about the major provisions of the bill with which we are concerned. We also encourage you to read the bill and bill analysis.
