Tell your legislators not to let false political urgency take precedence over the facts.

The legislature is wrapping up its last day of the regular session on May 20th, and there’s a lot at stake for Alaska’s energy future. Governor Dunleavy and developers have continued to press for property tax cuts for the AK LNG project, without providing legislators basic information or any real proof it’s even necessary. Alaskans have a lot to lose if legislators rush to pass this property tax legislation — either House Bill 381 or Senate Bill 280. Though SB 280 is much more detailed, and offers more financial guardrails, ultimately these bills are based on speculative economics and a glaring lack of facts from the developers — Glenfarne and the Alaska Gasline Development Corporation (AGDC). Governor Dunleavy and the developers are asking Alaskans to subsidize this gigaproject (yes that’s a thing — think mega-mega project in terms of cost), while also shouldering extra costs for road maintenance and essential services like EMS, and it puts intense pressure on already strained housing markets and school districts. Are we willing to take on that burden for a risky project that will increase our energy costs, give away state resources to Outside corporations, and contribute significantly to climate change?
