The goal should be to delegitimize and slow the GOP agenda which aims to rob the American people of having a voice in the confirmation of a Supreme Court Justice. As Senator Klobuchar passionaly stated on September 24th during a Senate Judiciary Committee session, "The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice. People are voting in droves right now. They are voting all over this country because President Trump is behind in states, in red states that no one even thought he could be behind in. Why? Because the people of this country are fighting back because they know what's on the line." Please do your utmost to support the American people's right to choose the next Justice according to the precepts of our democratic system of representation. We urge you to take a leadership role in the Senate confirmation hearings by taking the following steps: In advance of the hearings, do not legitimize the process or the nominee with a courtesy visit. This appointment is not about the individual, but rather about the conservative agenda. Speak out publicly in advance of the hearings, as did Senator Klobuchar, to make clear why this process is an affront to democracy, and to highlight the issues at stake for the American people. Plan your questioning to highlight the widely-supported policies that are at risk of being overturned by 6-3 conservative majority Supreme Court. Avoid focusing on the merits of the nominee. These hearings are an opportunity to educate the American public about the stakes and what they will likely lose, such as healthcare for millions, a women's right to choose, free and fair elections, progress on racial justice, climate change protection and more. These policies are at risk with any nominee supported by the ultra conservative wing of the Republican Party. Vigorously employ Senate rules and procedures, such as unanimous consent, roll-call votes, and quorum calls, to prolong the confirmation process for as long as possible. Work diligently with Minority Leader Schumer, members of the Judiciary Committee and Democratic Senators at large to achieve consensus on executing the strategy outlined here. The current situation calls for courage and resolve by Senate Democrats.
