Friend, Florida manatees are facing critical challenges, with the leading causes of their deaths being red tide and starvation. These devastating consequences are closely tied to harmful algae blooms (HABs) resulting from nutrient pollution in our coastal waters. However, it has come to my attention that there is conflicting legislation in place. While some commendable progress has been made with the passage of Senate Bill 724, which establishes the Seagrass Restoration Technology Development Initiative, there remains a glaring inconsistency with the $250,000 study by the University of Florida to evaluate the effectiveness of fertilizer bans. This study effectively hampers efforts to further restrict fertilizer usage while the study is conducted, as it prevents cities and towns from creating new ordinances or extending existing ones. I firmly believe that this study is not in the best interest of our environment or the well-being of our manatees. Use the link to contact YOUR lawmaker and thank them for supporting seagrass restoration and demand they prioritize further measurers to reduce fertilizer runoff.
