Dilawar Syed’s nomination to be the deputy administrator of the Small Business Administration — his confirmation would make him the highest-ranking American Muslim in the Biden Administration — is being blocked in committee by some senators. Internal memos and statements by these senators make implicit references to Dilawar Syed’s place of birth and background, and his advocacy on behalf of the Muslim American community. This is un-American. Our Constitution explicitly states that “no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.” It’s time for Leader Schumer to say enough is enough to the anti-Muslim obstructionists — and discharge Syed’s nomination out of committee and bring it to the Senate floor for a vote.
