Twenty states isn’t enough. The intent of conversion therapy is to change the sexual orientation of individuals. Not only has it been thoroughly debunked as being ineffective, it interrupts healthy identity development, creates mistrust of health professionals, and deteriorates family relationships. A peer-reviewed study published by The Trevor Project in the American Journal of Public Health found that LGBTQ+ youth who underwent conversion therapy were more than twice as likely to report having attempted suicide and more than 2.5 times as likely to report multiple suicide attempts in the past year. Let’s ban conversion therapy in all 50 states! We must protect young people that identify as LGBTQ+ in the rest of the country who are vulnerable to state sanctioned violations of their human rights. The Therapeutic Fraud Prevention Act, introduced in the previous Congress as H.R. 4146/ S. 2242, would classify conversion therapy as fraud, effectively banning it nationwide.
