The Trump administration is refusing to fund SNAP nutrition benefits starting November 1, even while it has a $5 billion contingency fund that it is legally required to use when SNAP benefits run out. This is not only blatantly illegal, it’s a violation of the federal government’s treaty obligations to Tribes. One million Native peoples -- which accounts for 24% of all Native households -- rely on SNAP nutrition benefits. And, across Turtle Island, 42 million people rely on SNAP, including 16 million children, 8 million elders, and 4 million people with disabilities. Additionally, 7 million people -- primarily low-income pregnant and postpartum women and over 40% of all infants living in the United States -- rely on WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition for Women, Infants and Children) for nutrition support. Take action now and send a message to Sec. of Agriculture Brooke Rollins and other top USDA officials demanding they use SNAP reserve funds, and other funds as needed, to fully fund SNAP and WIC throughout November.
