After hosting a “Future Energy Economy Summit” in Syracuse last month (which was invite-only and hosted multiple conversations on new nuclear in New York), the state appears to be moving ahead with planning a future for toxic, polluting, and dangerous reactors. The New York State Energy and Research Development Authority recently published a “blueprint” for the construction of new reactors and gave the public only 30 days to provide our feedback. While we managed to win an extension, the deadline is soon. We have until November 8th to tell our state and agency leaders that nuclear is NOT a climate solution! Nuclear is a dirty distraction, and if our state spends massive amounts of time and money on pursuing Small Modular Reactors (a technology design that is not even commercially-viable or in operation anywhere in the world), we will miss our climate goals. New Yorkers are struggling to pay their electricity bills today - we refuse to bankroll an expensive and polluting boondoggle that will only enrich the nuclear industry.
