They are on the front lines of food service and interact with hundreds of people per day. They are directly at risk from COVID-19, but at many dining halls, the staff do not have adequate protection. They do not have paid sick leave - meaning they are forced to choose between paying their rent and keeping their coworkers and the entire campus community safe. There is no clarity on what would require a dining hall to close for deep cleaning, and no sense of whether student workers would be paid if their dining hall were forced to close. Student workers at U-M, especially those who work in food service, should not be so unprotected, should not be forced to beg for testing, and should not have to choose between rent and public health.
