Today, on SAGE’s National Day of Advocacy, LGBT elders, people living with HIV and allies are in Washington, D.C. sharing their stories, face-to-face, with their elected representatives. Help us amplify our voice as one community and join us “virtually” online during this pivotal year – the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall uprising. Our LGBT elders were on the front lines at the Stonewall. These fearless trailblazers started the modern LGBT movement. They have lived through witch-hunts and violence, decriminalization, conversion therapy and the AIDS crisis. Now, more than ever, we must stand with our LGBT elder pioneers, and those living with HIV/AIDS, so that they can get the support and services they deserve in order to age with dignity and respect. No one should have to go back into the closet because they’re scared of being “out” at a nursing home. No one should be denied housing because they have a same-sex partner or because of their gender presentation. No one should be refused medical services because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. No one should be denied HIV medication because of a lack of funds. As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, we must do better by our LGBT elder pioneers and those living with HIV/AIDS. That’s why we are asking you to tell your representatives that LGBT elders and those living with HIV/AIDS matter. Remind them about the resiliency of those who started the resistance. Tell them about the challenges facing LGBT older people. Ask them to stand and protect LGBT pioneers who bravely and proudly stood up 50 years ago for their rights and who are "Still Out in Front." If ever there was a year for our older LGBT pioneers, it’s 2019 – 50 years since Stonewall.
