The technology promises to capture some carbon dioxide from polluting facilities and store it underground, but across the globe carbon capture projects have consistently proven to be ineffective and unsafe. Big Oil’s plan to dump carbon waste in a Kern County oil field is no exception. It will prolong dirty fossil fuel operations and endanger public health and safety in Kern, a region already burdened with the worst air pollution in the country. To transport carbon dioxide (CO2), this project relies on 13 miles of pipelines, part of which passes within a few miles of an elementary school. Leaks from CO2 pipelines can cause asphyxiation, seizures, loss of consciousness, and potentially death.
