Stop the fossil fuel giveaway budget

For the last few years, Beltway types have been obsessed with something called “permitting reform.” For climate-minded Democrats, that means ways to move wind and solar energy from plains and deserts to the cities that need it. For Republicans in thrall to the fossil fuel industry, it means: more drilling, everywhere, all the time, never mind the nearby communities being harmed. The budget reconciliation bill Congress is now considering would allow companies to pay a fee to access a faster, more streamlined process that would not be reviewable by the courts. Environmental groups and frontline communities would likely have a harder time suing the government. But permitting reform is not normally a budget matter. And the Senate parliamentarian can strip out items that are merely incidental to a budget bill. MAGA Republicans are trying to pretend that because there’s a fee involved, their permitting reform belongs in a budget bill. And they're floating all kinds of noxious gas filled trial balloons to overrule the parliamentarian on other issues from cleaner cars to basic arithmetic. In short, MAGA Republicans are up to a particularly nasty trick. Their kind of permitting reform is horrible for our climate. It’ll deprive environmental justice communities of their voice. And, because this needs open debate, House Republicans are instead trying to sneak it through in the fine print of a budget reconciliation bill. Use this page to start a letter to your member of the House, and both your Senators, telling them that permitting reform is a dirty bad deal that has no place in the budget!
