Stop the Attack On Your Wages

	<thumbnail_url>https://can2-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/letters/photos/000/027/608/normal/gallatin.jpg</thumbnail_url>

Legislation introduced last week by Senator Jeff Flake, (R-AZ) would eliminate the Davis-Bacon Act’s prevailing wage language on specific federal infrastructure projects. The Davis-Bacon Act, passed in 1931, requires that certain workers, predominantly those employed in the building trades, be paid a prevailing wage. Davis Bacon is one of the most important pieces of pro-worker legislation that has ever been passed by the Federal government. Thanks to this legislation, millions of families have worked their way into the middle class. This prevailing wage is set by the Labor Department based on the going (or prevailing) rate in an area for that contracted job. This rate, which takes into account union and non-union wages on a job, keeps wages fair and maintains a level playing field that allows good local contractors the chance to compete for work, regardless of whether they are union or non-union. The point of the Davis Bacon Act was to make sure that Federal money is spent to invest in communities and does not drive down wages. Repealing prevailing wages directly undermines President Trump’s promise to create good jobs with high wages that strengthen the American economy. Take action to the right and contact your Senators to urge them to vote NO to Senator Flake's repeal of Davis-Bacon on these federally funded projects. Doing so will send a strong signal that the days of business as usual have ended and it is up to Washington politicians to now stand by their pledges to not only create new jobs but also protect the high paying jobs that only skilled craftsmen and women like those only SMART sheet metal workers can fill.
