Using billions in public funds to further mass incarceration is not the answer. We are calling on Mayor Adams to Invest in PEOPLE, Not jails and to stop building new jails (which he promised on the campaign trail). We need alternatives to the $8.3 billion borough jail plan to invest in education, pubic spaces, health care, and more. The cost of housing one inmate in NYC is now $556,539 per person per year. That's over half a million dollars or $1,525 every day in taxpayer dollars. Money that could go to resources for affordable housing and health services that will address long standing problems in communities of color all over New York City. The impact to Chinatown will be devastating. The proposed jail will use both Centre Street and Baxter Streets for construction, an already densely populated area with senior housing, public green space, and small businesses in the immediate area. Chinatown is still recovering from the economic disaster from COVID-19,  the resulting xenophobia, and the increase in crime.
