Stop the Closure & Consolidation of Chavez Prep Middle School!

Two weeks ago, staff from Chavez Prep School, the first unionized charter school in DC, found out that their Board of Trustees planned on closing their school when a teacher got a call from the press. Parents and students were told that they had as little as ten days to find a new school for next year. The announced closure was devastating to this community. Chavez Prep Middle School, named after Cesar Chavez, wasn’t forced to shut down by the DC Public Charter School Board. In fact, Chavez Prep was in the top ten citywide in terms of growth based on standardized test scores last year. Instead, as Chavez Schools explained to their bondholders, they wanted to close down Chavez Prep in order to “monetize the asset.” The Chavez Schools Board of Trustees and Tensquare, the for-profit management company it hired, has continually put financial concerns over the needs of its students and D.C.’s laws have allowed this. We can't let this happen. Take action now.
