This is not just an attack on libraries. It’s an attack on the workers who keep them running. IMLS funding supports jobs, staffing, and essential services in every state. When that funding is cut, library workers face layoffs, reduced hours, and increased workloads—while being asked to do more with less. We’ve already seen the consequences of federal instability: halted grants, disrupted programs, and growing uncertainty across the field. Library workers are the ones who absorb that harm. Eliminating IMLS would deepen precarity for an already underpaid and undervalued workforce, while shifting the burden onto strained local budgets. Libraries do not function without workers.
