The United States Postal Service is being pushed toward a financial breaking point that could cause it to run out of cash as soon as February of next year, and only Congress can fix it. The Postmaster General has warned that the current financial crisis at USPS could “lead to the end of the Postal Service as we know it” if lawmakers fail to act. This crisis did not come out of nowhere. It is the result of years of bad postal policy decisions that drained billions from the Postal Service and tied its hands. Donald Trump and his greedy corporate buddies would love to see a privatized Postal Service. They want to throw entire communities under the bus, outsource delivery, and sell the post office off piece all to make millions. We cannot allow that to happen. It would mean higher costs for families, risk service shutdowns for rural communities, and the loss of a public institution that guarantees universal access to mail. Congress must remove the financial barriers that will allow USPS to stabilize its finances, and create a sustainable future. In 2022, the Postal Service Reform Act was one step that ended requirements such as the pre-funding of retiree health benefits and restrictions on pricing and some service expansion. It is time to completely untie the Postal Service’s hands and allow the agency to fully manage benefit and retirement funds, pension investments, and to extend the agency’s borrowing authority that hasn’t been adjusted for inflation since 1992. And Congress must reverse the law restricting the USPS from providing new services that could generate new streams of revenue. Removing these policy restrictions will allow the Postal Service to continue delivering our mail and serving the public effectively, saving the agency billions of dollars per year. The Postal Service is not supposed to be a profit machine. It is a lifeline for communities across the country. Take action to save the Post Office! Click ‘START WRITING’ to sign and send a message demanding Congress reverse bad postal policy and stop privatization now.
