Please help us in building support for SB 3478, which directs IDOT to create a statewide bike grid and requires that bike lanes must be protected. This bill is not a Bike Grid Now proposal but does initiate a planning stage for the grid. We feel this is an important step to help us in creating a safer Chicago and IL broadly. We are also uplifting the following bills! This week in committee: February 17th- Feb 19th HB2454 - Makes bicycles intended users (rather than permitted) of a roadway, excluding interstates or controlled access highways. HB2934- Lowers the urban speed limit from 30 to 20 on roadways and from 15 to 10 in alleyways HB4333: Lowers BAC threshold for DUI from .08% to .05% HB4281: Lowers population threshold for installing automated speed enforcement cameras from cities with 1,000,000+ to 25,000+ in counties that have over 3,000,000 residents. Here is another bill that I would like you to support: SB2966 - Requires active transportation safety coursework in K-8 annually, including pedestrian, bike, and ebike safety for Grades 4-8 Please consider opposing the following bills: Pedestrian and Bike : HB5081 - Removes some eligibility of "safety zones" (for automated speed enforcement) when the speed limit is decreased by ordinance from 30 to 20 mph. HB3627 - Allows substitution of physical infrastructure for quick-build infrastructure on protected bike lanes. However, it has exact requirements that conform to one company's specifications (Zicla) and has no requirement to replace them with permanent infrastructure. HB4044 - Expands usage of automated speed enforcement from 1,000,000 residents to any home rule unit (and non-home rule with a successful referendum) for the purposes of using revenue for property tax relief without investments in safer infrastructure. Autonomous Vehicles: HB4633 - Allows for a pilot of autonomous vehicles in counties with 1,000,000 residents and Sangamon, Madison, St. Clair, and Monroe counties. Allows for the authorization of AVs after three years. While AVs may excel in some safety categories, they are deficient in others and weigh more than internal combustion vehicles, making contact with bicyclists more deadly. HB5220 - Would allow autonomous vehicles to operate on the public way. SB3308 - Allows for an autonomous vehicle pilot program statewide.
