As part of the approval of the Hilton Santa Barbara and an adjacent property, the Hilton was supposed to build and maintain a 100-bed hostel providing affordable (low-cost) accommodations. But it is not clear whether that commitment is being honored. That “hostel” appears to be operating as a 31-room boutique hotel offering rooms for between $270-$630+ a night. There is a question regarding whether the “hostel” received public funds intended to help establish a regional hostel (i.e., $100,000 in-lieu fees from another resort project). Now, the current 360-room Hilton Santa Barbara Resort is trying to expand by another 73 rooms without providing any new low-cost affordable accommodations. Urge the City to grant the appeal and deny the expansion project!
