<description>“The rich and the poor have equal dignity and their rights must be guaranteed.” (Pope Francis, Laudato Si’- on Care for our Common Home, paragraph 94) A strong and resilient farm and food system benefits our local and global communities including family farmers, ranchers, and consumers. nearly $1 trillion in spending. It is divided into sections (titles) that cover specific program areas including Nutrition, Commodities, Conservation, Trade and more. The Nutrition title comprises 76% of the Farm Bill’s total spending. Recognizing the inherent worth of all our brothers and sisters, as Midwestern Franciscan Justice Promotors, we are compelled to insist that Congress reauthorizes a just Farm Bill in 2023 that supports the dignity of all people, especially those in poverty, and offers safeguards for preserving creation. Here are our priorities: The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) must be strengthened to support people in poverty. make SNAP allotments affordable eliminate 3-month time limits on working adult eligibility expands food choice SNAP recipients may purchase remove 5-year waiting period for lawful immigrants for SNAP and other aid. International programs that address hunger at its root causes must be maintained. The McGovern-Dole International Food for Education program provides free, nutritious school lunches for millions of children. Food for Peace has provided emergency support to over 4 billion people worldwide. Farmer-to-Farmer enables U.S. volunteers to help train and support farmers in other countries so they can adapt to climate change and improve their harvests. A just Farm Bill supports family farmers and ranchers over factory farms. place a moratorium on large concentrated animal feeding operations, and require country of origin labeling for meat and dairy products require reforms within the Department of Agriculture to prevent future discrimination against Black farmers and ranchers. Climate change resources such as conservation programs and expanded renewable energy and energy efficiency opportunities must be included. Environmental Quality Incentives Program (S658) Conservation Stewardship Program Rural Energy for America Program Conservation Reserve Program (CRP).
