This follows less than a week after an 18 year old gunman targeted and killed 10 Black Americans at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York. Assault weapons with high-capacity magazines, pistol grips, flash suppressors, barrel shrouds do not belong on our streets at all, and they certainly don’t belong in the hands of an 18 year old who isn’t even legally able to drink or gamble. In fact, at 18, someone isn’t old enough to rent a car or a hotel room. Not only can they not legally gamble, in most places they aren’t allowed to even be in the casino. They can't get a pilot's license, buy recreational marijuana, or become an Uber driver. But thanks to the hold the NRA has had for decades over our elected leaders, 18 is old enough to buy an assault riffle capable of unspeakable murder in our nation’s schools. The NRA is no longer the force it was. They’re under criminal investigation. Americans don’t support them. And they’re broke, totally bankrupt and unable to mount any kind of legitimate political pressure on Congress. There’s never been a better time for Congress to take them on and win. We must refuse to succumb to despair. We must refuse to believe that we can’t make Congress take action. We must refuse to give up on our fight to make America safer for children.
