But NAFTA’s rules can be changed to put working people first. That’s why renegotiation is so important. The president says the renegotiation is over. But the job is not done. It’s not yet clear that the new deal will promote good high-wage jobs or put working family interests over profits. We need a deal that: Ends labor suppression in Mexico, so Mexican workers are free to join unions and negotiate with employers. Includes enforcement tools that will make certain violations are swiftly identified and fixed—or else sanctions will be imposed promptly. Eliminates incentives to outsource good jobs; and Puts working people’s interests ahead of profits, including by eliminating giveaways to Big Pharma, ensuring a safe food supply and providing consumers the information they want (like country-of-origin labeling) about the products they buy.
