Tell Congress: Cosponsor the Protect Gulf Life Act

The Gulf of Mexico is home to sea turtles, whales, manatees, sharks, and countless other animals that depend on healthy ocean habitat. But a sweeping federal decision has put many of these species at greater risk by exempting oil and gas operations across the Gulf from Endangered Species Act protections. Right now, this unprecedented exemption puts dozens of threatened and endangered species that rely on the Gulf ecosystems in harm's way. Most at risk is the critically endangered Rice’s whale, fondly called “America’s whale” because it is the only whale that makes its home only in American waters. With only about 50 whales alive today, we cannot afford to weaken the safeguards that stand between them and extinction. The Protect Gulf Life Act would restore vital Endangered Species Act protections. It would overturn the exemption, ensure that oil and gas activities in the Gulf of Mexico must again comply with the Endangered Species Act, and prevent a similar sweeping exemption from being reissued for three years. The Endangered Species Act is America’s strongest law for preventing extinction. It protects wildlife and the ecosystems that support Gulf communities, fisheries, recreation, and coastal economies. Tell your Representative: Cosponsor the Protect Gulf Life Act and defend Gulf wildlife.
