The MAGA-packed Court has spent the last four years ripping at the fabric of our democracy—gutting voting rights, overturning Roe v. Wade, allowing billionaires to buy our elections, and even granting broad presidential immunity. Now that Trump is back in office, he’s doubling down on the MAGA takeover of the courts. He’s declared ideological war on members of the judicial branch that dare try to hold him accountable. He’s ignoring orders from lower courts and the Supreme Court alike, and threatening to impeach judges who disagree with him. Now, MAGA members in the House of Representatives are pushing the JUDGES Act, which would create 22 new judgeships for Trump to fill before his term concludes. This bill would give Trump even more power over the judiciary branch, allowing him to install loyalists, evade accountability, and shape laws in our country for decades to come. The judicial nominees he’s choosing this term are already expected to be far younger, more ideological, and loyal to Trump. We can’t afford to let Trump rubber-stamp nearly two dozen judges that could make life harder for the communities hardest hit by his hateful agenda. Congress has agreed that we need more federal judgeships, which means there’s still plenty of Democratic support that could get this over the finish line. Usually, these bills are passed in good faith before elections, without knowing which party will benefit. But the MAGA-controlled House of Representatives refused to pass the bill until Trump was elected, so they could be sure he could gain more unchecked power. Now, Trump has now pushed us into a full-blown constitutional crisis. Democrats and Republicans alike need to hear loud and clear that We The People do not support the MAGA takeover of the judiciary branch. Now more than ever, we need district courts and judges to perform their duty as a check and balance on the executive branch. We need fair and impartial judges—ones who won’t advance an extreme anti-immigrant, anti-LGTBQ+, anti-woman, and anti-democracy agenda.
