Most people today rely on three things when they retire: whatever they have saved, including Social Security, defined contribution plans such as IRAs, and whatever they receive from their employer, which might be a pension or a 401(k). It’s not the fault of young people or gig workers, Uber drivers, or Walmart workers who have to work into their 80s. But if you are freaking out right now, don’t! First we must strengthen Social Security. The Social Security Enhancement Act would tax incomes over $250,000 to increase Social Security benefits for all. According to a report from the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, adding this tax to just the top 10 CEOs in the country would generate $147 million for Social Security. The Retirement Savings for Americans Act would mandate that every worker who doesn't have a retirement account put in at least 1% and the government would match it up to 3%.
