Tell Congress: Rein In Big Tech’s Data Center Power Grab

America’s data centers are using more electricity than data centers anywhere else in the world — including countries racing to expand artificial intelligence, like China. That should stop Congress cold. According to Canary Media, data centers in the United States accounted for nearly 40% of global data-center power demand in 2025. That is more than any other country, even as governments and companies around the world compete to build the next generation of AI. If Big Tech wants to build the future here, it should not be allowed to do it by burning through more power, straining the grid, raising utility bills, and creating new excuses for fossil fuel expansion. Congress needs to act. Artificial intelligence may be new, but the choice in front of lawmakers is not. They can let some of the richest companies on Earth demand massive amounts of electricity with weak oversight, vague climate promises, and too little public accountability. Or they can require data centers in the United States to meet or exceed best-in-class global efficiency standards, so the country that leads the world in data-center power demand also leads on efficiency, transparency, and clean energy. No company should get a blank check to overwhelm the grid. No community should be forced to absorb more pollution, water stress, noise, or higher electric bills so Big Tech can expand faster. And no utility should be allowed to use data-center demand as an excuse to build new fossil fuel infrastructure that locks in climate pollution for decades. Congress should pass binding data-center accountability legislation that requires large facilities to use best-in-class efficiency practices, publicly disclose electricity and water use, run on new additional clean energy, support grid flexibility, and pay their fair share for any new infrastructure their operations require. The U.S. can lead the world in technology without leading the world in wasteful energy demand. Tell Congress: Big Tech’s AI boom must not become a power grab. Pass strong federal standards requiring data centers to operate efficiently, use clean energy, disclose their impacts, and protect families from higher utility bills.
