This bill would result in a 300% increase in funding for ICE detention centers. Why are we giving ICE huge amounts of money to detain more people? Under Donald Trump’s current Acting Director, Todd Lyons, ICE is the lead enforcer of Trump’s mass deportation agenda, infamous for carrying out cruel raids and detentions, ignoring court orders, and helping to build Trump’s inhumane deportation machine that is devastating families and entire communities. ICE is breaking our due process laws, illegally arresting residents with permanent status while deporting others, denying them of their right to an attorney and their day in court. ICE was designed to be led by a Senate-confirmed director, to ensure accountability against abuse like this. But Lyons is taking extreme actions as ‘acting’ director, without even being formally nominated. Throughout Trump’s first term, he rotated through Acting ICE Directors without ever giving them a full public hearing. This is a way to abuse the law and amass unchecked power in the hands of a dictatorial executive branch. Already, we’ve seen how far Trump’s lawlessness is willing to go. In April, his administration orchestrated ICE’s public arrest of a sitting judge in Milwaukee – turning it into a media spectacle designed to intimidate the judiciary and break the system of checks and balances. We can’t keep pouring our tax dollars into an unaccountable agency that refuses to submit to the barest oversight from the Senate. Congress must not slash Medicaid to pay for tax cuts for the ultra-rich and a mass deportation regime.
