Contact the Senate: Pass Background Checks and Reinstate the Ban on Assault Weapons Now

	<thumbnail_url>https://actionnetwork.org//images/generic_facebook.jpg</thumbnail_url>

This week an armed gunman went into an elementary school in Texas and murdered children and teachers. The response from the right-wing has been a mix of the same responses they have given every time this happens, but the scariest is the call for MORE guns in schools. That’s right, in response to 19 children and two adults being murdered by a man wielding an AK-47 assault rifle in a public school, the NRA has called for arming teachers. Senator Ted Cruz has called for armed guards in the classroom. And the Republican Party writ large is calling for more guns in schools. This is the exact opposite of what America needs. We need less guns in the classroom, not more. And that means, the Senate must immediately pass the Enhanced Background Checks Act already approved by the House and reinstate the Assault Weapon Ban now. For 10 years the Assault Weapons Ban worked. It did not stop all mass shootings, but it significantly reduced the number and saved countless lives. After the ban ended, mass shootings using an assault rifle soared, increasing at almost three times the rate. Assault weapons with high-capacity magazines, pistol grips, flash suppressors, barrel shrouds do not belong on our streets at all, and they certainly don’t belong in our schools. We must not give up on our fight to make America and our public schools safer for children. Click ‘Start Writing’ to send a direct message to your senators to demand they pass background checks and ban assault weapons now.
