For years, it has been standard practice for ICE to report to Congress and investigate the deaths of detainees within 30 days of their release. The AP reported that at least 18 detainees have died since Jan. 1 and that “experts say many other deaths from natural causes likely would have been preventable with timely medical care.” This move away from accountability is yet another effort by ICE and Trump to hide their cruelty and expand their ability to disappear our neighbors in a culture of fear. Understanding how many people die in custody, why, and where is an important data set to fully understand the police reform needed at all levels of law enforcement. Congress is supposed to work for us and provide a critical check on Executive Power.
