Groceries, housing, utilities, transportation, and child care take money out of every paycheck. Congress can give families more room in their budgets by expanding the Child Tax Credit. The credit already helps millions of households. It lifted 2.4 million children above the poverty line in 2024. Yet children in many families with low incomes still cannot receive its full value. Those families should be included in any serious effort to make life more affordable. In 2021, Congress showed how much more the credit could do. A temporary expansion made it fully available to families with little or no earnings and sent payments throughout the year. Those improvements expired. Congress should restore and make permanent a stronger, fully refundable credit with regular payments. Americans for Tax Fairness is part of The Price Is High Week of Action and meeting with congressional offices to press for an expanded Child Tax Credit, action on high prices, and a tax code that makes the wealthy and large corporations pay their fair share. Members of Congress should hear the same demand from people across the country. Messages from supporters will back up those meetings and show lawmakers how many people expect them to act.
