Gabrielle’s death was heartbreaking, and nothing in this action diminishes the gravity of that loss or the pain experienced by those who loved her. But Andrew’s case raises serious concerns about trauma, mental illness, severe medical illness, and the constitutionality of Florida’s death penalty system itself. Andrew survived profound childhood abuse, lifelong psychological trauma, and now suffers from serious medical conditions — including chronic kidney disease — that may place him at heightened risk of severe suffering during execution. His case also reflects broader concerns about Florida’s rushed and arbitrary execution process, which allows death warrants to move forward on extraordinarily compressed timelines that undermine meaningful review in life-or-death cases.
