Contract negotiations have been going on for more than a year, but management is still refusing to give meaningful responses on issues essential to our well-being as journalists, including proposals to improve our grossly inadequate 3 days of sick leave and 6 weeks of parental leave. The company also continues to refuse to recognize Juneteenth as a company holiday, even though it’s the only federal holiday to be excluded. Management has instead proposed that we give up our floating holiday for Juneteenth, even though many of us use that floating holiday for religious and other important observances. Instead of responding with proposals that recognize the dignity and humanity of its workers, management has threatened us at the table, suggesting that they would offer less favorable terms the longer negotiations continue.
