Tell National Fuel: We Won’t Pay for More Dirty Pipes!

Last year, the state called on gas utilities to come up with a 20-year plan to follow the 2019 Climate Law. The Climate Law sets Western New York on a path for increased reliability, efficiency, and health. But National Fuel’s 20-year gas plan is more of the same: fracked gas that is responsible for childhood asthma, climate catastrophe, and higher bills for customers. Earlier this year, National Fuel used customer’s private information to make robocalls against the climate law. National Fuel is also a steering committee member of an industry front group that opposes the law’s implementation. Their long-term plan is similarly unethical, disingenuous, and self-interested. National Fuel’s plan includes replacing over a thousand miles of gas pipeline at a cost of over one-million dollars per mile, but these pipes will quickly become obsolete due to climate law mandates. Through rebates and discounts, customers are already modernizing and electrifying their heating and cooking with state-of-the art appliances like cold-climate heat pumps and induction stoves. The remaining National Fuel customers will be stuck with higher bills paying for unnecessary gas infrastructure. The Climate Law requires a 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, but National Fuel’s plan doesn’t come close. Instead of following the law, National Fuel delays the inevitable, propping up shareholders while burdening customers. We need to tell National Fuel to look toward the future, follow the law, and stop contributing to climate chaos.
