As a member of District Council 37 AFSCME, I’m speaking up on behalf of my union siblings in the home care sector who will be negatively impacted by this legislation if it is passed. While this legislation is being presented as a reform, it would have devastating consequences for unionized home care workers and the disabled New Yorkers who rely on them every day. Many of these workers are members of DC 37 Local 389 Home Care Employees, representing 7,000 private-sector home health care aides who have fought hard for fair wages, health insurance, and retirement benefits through collective bargaining. The City Council should not take away workers’ collective bargaining rights through legislation. We need solutions that support both caregivers and the people they care for, not policies that destabilize jobs and essential care services.
