Tell Our Legislators: Stop Putting Setbacks Before Solutions

The overdose crisis claimed 2,893 lives in New Jersey last year. Yet our legislators are still moving punitive policies that have long failed to end overdose. State bill A5649, sponsored by Asm. Reginald Atkins, would escalate existing criminal penalties for fentanyl possession by lowering the amount of the drug required to be charged with a felony to just 5g - equivalent to a six-pack of beer for folks who are actively using. This rule change will make it more difficult for law enforcement and prosecutors to distinguish between someone’s personal supply and someone dealing, which will condemn even more people struggling with a substance use disorder to prison instead of the recovery support services they need and deserve. We have plenty of evidence that putting more people behind bars isn’t going to prevent an already out-of-control overdose crisis from getting worse. We also have plenty of evidence-based solutions that we know really help, like medication assisted treatment and harm reduction services. Join us in calling on our New Jersey Assemblymembers to stop this bill before it goes to a vote - and to focus on fixes that save lives instead.
