Tell The Home Depot: DIY shouldn't spell danger

A weekend home improvement project shouldn’t expose you or your family to dangerous chemicals. But right now you can walk into The Home Depot and buy paint strippers1 containing highly toxic chemicals. Paint strippers containing the chemical methylene chloride have been linked to more than 50 deaths nationwide since the 1980’s.2 Long-term exposure has been linked to liver and lung cancer.3 Another chemical used in paint strippers, NMP, poses risks to pregnant women.4 Recently the EPA proposed major restrictions on these chemicals in paint strippers under the new chemical safety law. But that process could take years and there’s no reason for The Home Depot to keep selling products containing these chemicals in the meantime, especially when safer alternatives are readily available.5 We recently sent a letter to The Home Depot executives urging them to stop selling products containing these chemicals, but they have yet to respond, so we need your help! Send a message to the CEO of The Home Depot now! 1 http://saferchemicals.org/sc/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/saferchemicals.org_products_sold_at_home_depot_containing_dcm_or_nmp.pdf 2 http://www.cdph.ca.gov/programs/ohb-face/Documents/paintstripper.pdf 3 https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2015-09/documents/dcm_opptworkplanra_final.pdf 4 https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2015-11/documents/nmp_ra_3_23_15_final.pdf 5 http://www.turi.org/TURI_Publications/TURI_Chemical_Fact_Sheets/Methylene_Chloride_Fact_Sheet
