In a new briefing "Rethinking how transport funding is spent in the East Midlands" sent to the Mayor we argue that new roads are not the best solution to solve congestion or open up areas for development in the region. It would be better to spend the £2 billion on a range of travel projects that can also provide better health, reduce health/transport inequalities and better support the Mayor's travel and inclusive growth goals. These include better rural bus service, ensuring new developments are not car-dependent and making streets safer and more people-friendly. There is still time for the Mayor to reprioritise her spending. Please can you contact the Mayor and ask her to look at all the options and support sustainable travel.
