Tell Your Lawmakers: Pass the 2024 Florida Voting Rights Act

As the freedom to vote continues to face attacks from extremist politicians, we are proud to see legislation introduced by Sen. Geraldine Thompson (D-Orlando) and Rep. LaVon Bracy Davis (D-Orlando) which aims to protect Florida's democracy and ensure equal access at the ballot box: the Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Florida Voting Rights Act (HB 1035). The legislation is named in honor of Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore, two of Florida’s most important voting rights advocates who died championing the right to vote for Black Floridians. Just as Harry and Harriette paved the way for Black Floridians to vote in Florida, the Florida Voting Rights Act also aims to increase access to voting. This landmark legislation builds on key federal protections in the 1965 Voting Rights Act that have been eroded over the past decade by the U.S. Supreme Court. It also expands access to voting by allowing eligible Floridians to register to vote at any time – up to and including Election Day – and automatically registers eligible Floridians to vote when they interact with the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, unless they opt out. Additionally, the bill repeals anti-voter laws the state has passed in recent years that create intentional barriers to voting. Write Gov. DeSantis and your state lawmakers and tell them: pass the 2024 Florida Voting Rights Act and ensure that every voter's voice is heard and valued in our democracy.
