By reductively defining a person’s sex by their reproductive organs and sex chromosomes (which are not normally checked during most people’s lifetimes), this bill will create a precedent in federal law for denying transgender and intersex people their rights. This defines trans people as pretenders and intersex people as in need of medical correction, contrary to the scientific understanding of sex. This only serves to codify cisgender, non-intersex people as normal and everyone else as deviant. This bill will not protect women because it intends to stop alleged threats which simply do not exist – trans female athletes do not have a statistically significant advantage and do not pose a threat simply for being trans. What it will do is cause immediate harm to a marginalized population, open up young girls to the threat of sexual abuse in the name of “confirming their sex,” and further erase the confidence of the people in the will of our government to defend us from extremist far-right ideologies. Furthermore, enforcing this policy would force female athletes of all ages to undergo invasive and highly expensive medical procedures. All for a range of activities that includes chess and golf. We strongly urge you to oppose HR 28. Don't hurt women and girls in service of a far-right myth.
