Tell Your Representatives to Protect New York’s Climate Law

	<thumbnail_url>https://actionnetwork.org//images/generic_facebook.jpg</thumbnail_url>

Instead of allowing transparent discussion, the Governor is actively trying to strip protections for New Yorkers by weakening New York’s landmark climate law—the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA)—in the secretive budget process, behind closed doors. Tell the Governor, Speaker Carl Heastie, and Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins that you will not stand for this! It is morally reprehensible for the Governor to be trying to use budget negotiations to strong-arm legislators into changing the Climate Law that we fought so hard for. Industry-driven voices falsely claim that the CLCPA law will increase energy costs. That’s simply not true. In fact, studies have repeatedly shown that implementing the Climate Law will save New Yorkers money. Rising utility costs are being driven by fossil fuel prices and the costs of maintaining outdated systems, not by the policies passed by our Legislature in 2019 to move us away from them. Weakening the CLCPA will only trap New Yorkers with ever-increasing utility bills and delay the transition to more affordable and stable energy sources. The CLCPA was designed to do more than cut emissions. It is the state’s roadmap for cleaner air, lower and stable energy costs, and long-overdue investment in communities that have faced disproportionate pollution for decades. While federal climate protections are weakening, New York must lead, not retreat. New Yorkers deserve lower energy bills, cleaner air, and a stable energy future. Changes to our foundational climate policy should not be rushed through closed-door budget negotiations. Add your name to tell Governor Hochul, Speaker Heastie and Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins that the path forward is to implement the CLCPA—not weaken it! The Governor must not be allowed to change the law in the budget process without robust and transparent discussion with all stakeholders.
